You may spend and stretch your stay until New Year's. Of just spend a week around Chrismas and save. You will pay regular summer rates until December 28th. From this day onwards, hotels offer their rooms in prepayable packages.
Generic booking tools are wrong! There are rooms.
During Carnival hotels offer rooms in packages
We always get the same remarks. I tried a booking tool, and it shows all hotels as fully booked. Is it true? No. Maybe they haven't received rates yet, or maybe their allotment of rooms is sold out. We usually know of good options until about one or two weeks before Carnival. But don't push your luck. It is easy to keep updated.

All Heaven breaks loose at midnight
Rio is so hot in the summer, that nobody cares much if it drizzles a bit on New Year's Eve. Everyone will be there. Two and a half million people. If you intend to be among them get ready for one of the prettiest parties in the world.
There are usually four stages set around the beach with live music shows from 8 p.m. until very late. The fireworks pop at midnight, for about twenty minutes or so. Photos of fireworks sort of all look the same, so we made a short video showing how the party operates. There are other videos available at http://www.youtube.com and other websites.
White is the color of YemanjÁ
Traditions that you may follow or not
This is the name of the Deity of the Seas and Rivers in the Candomblé religion, always portrayed in a white gown. A touch of yellow is good for money, and red for romance. Black is not really the right color this night.
Many people carry flowers with them, and they will throw these flowers in the sea, an offering to Yemanjá. Some people wait for the seventh wave, to jump for good luck.
The real New Year's celebration for people that are devoted to Candomblé and Yemanjá now happens a couple of days earlier. They take offerings that include boats full of goods and flowers, statues of Yemanjá. You may receive a free blessing from one of the mães de santo - just enter the line.
It won't do you any harm at all... 
Other Beaches, Other Parties: Traffic stops on New Year's in Rio. Subway tickets are purchased ahead at selected stations. Private cars are not allowed on many streets. You will have to count on buses, taxis, or your feet. If you are in Barra, you may have to celebrate there.
The beach parties with international DJ's at Ipanema have been canceled. Ipanema Beach is narrower, the event was attracting too many people. Ipanema residents were not that happy with the mess left behind by patrons.
